‘I first met my biological dad aged 24 – and we went on to have a baby’ – Irish Mirror

A woman who first encountered her biological father at the age of 24 and subsequently had a child with him has spoken candidly about their controversial relationship. At just five weeks old in 1965, Sophia was given up for adoption by the birthing home where her unmarried mother had been “sent in shame” after falling pregnant.

Her father was dispatched to Australia for “work experience” and, despite her mother’s pleas, Sophia was brought up by adoptive parents in Yorkshire. She would not meet her birth parents until she had reached adulthood.

In a final gesture, her mother, Janet, registered her details in the hope that Sophia might one day seek to reconnect. Once she reached her 20s, Sophia felt an urge to track down her birth parents.

Sophia met Janet in an encounter she described as both “joyful” and “disorientating” – but admitted she felt “utterly unprepared” for the “intensity” of the reunion.

Despite Janet and her birth father Michael having lost touch over the years, she managed to locate his personal details. To make contact, Sophia wrote to Michael in Australia and he replied.

Sophia told The Times that it marked the start of months of letters and phone calls as the pair “formed an intense connection”, talking about everything from philosophy and art to psychology, and Sophia said she finally felt “understood”.

Their encounter took place in the UK: “From the moment we met, it felt astonishingly easy between us, as though – rather than having never met until now – we had known each other forever.”

However, circumstances shifted after their initial day together. Sophia revealed that while she remained awake on the sofa, with Michael sleeping in her bed, she found herself “disturbed” by emotions she could “barely admit”.

She confessed: “What frightened me most was not that the connection felt wrong, but that it felt so natural. I realised with horror that what I was experiencing resembled romantic attraction.

“I had spent much of my adult life thus far searching for this kind of effortless emotional connection with a man, and now, impossibly, I felt it for the last person I should.”

In her account, Sophia suggests that she experienced a condition called genetic sexual attraction (GSA), whereby biological relatives separated at birth can experience an intense bond.

Yet Sophia and her birth father remained unaware of this, and the duo would subsequently holiday together and develop a deeper connection, which led to a kiss on a beach.

Sophia and Michael proceeded to embark on a relationship, sharing a home in Australia and to all appearances, seeming like an ordinary couple; they even held the belief they could succeed.

However, the burden of their secret took a mental toll, with Sophia admitting that they knew deep down that their relationship wouldn’t work in public. She eventually decided to move back to England.

On the night before she was due to fly, Sophia found out she was pregnant. Unable to go through with a termination, she went back to Australia and had a son.

She revealed they’d worried that her son might experience inherited disorders, but he flourished. To account for his origins, Sophia invented a fake boyfriend – and she continued her relationship with her father.

Yet, the “unbearable” strain of the secret would ultimately prove too powerful, and Sophia moved back to the UK. Her mum would eventually ask Sophia who the father was, and she decided to confess.

As the bombshell circulated around the two families, Sophia faced some “emotionally brutal” years, complete with “confrontations” and “relentless pressure” for the pair not to meet again.

Later, Sophia found herself engaged to a different man and having another son. Meanwhile, her son would visit his father in Australia and missed him when he wasn’t there; Sophia decided to tell him the truth.

She says her son handled the information with “remarkable maturity”, but additional complications emerged in 2004. One of Michael’s former partners reported their relationship to the police; he was arrested.

He landed a suspended sentence for incest, but due to the consenting nature of the relationship between two adults who hadn’t had a familial relationship, it was described as “technical incest”.

Back in the UK, police interviewed Sophia but opted not to pursue charges, but she still worried about a potential warrant in Australia. Her sons both decided to live in Australia, so Sophia took action.

Seeking legal help, Sophia put her case to the Australian authorities, and it was discontinued, with all charges withdrawn, leaving Sophia and her family with “indescribable” happiness.

Summing up her story and explaining why she chose to speak publicly about the matter, Sophia argued that “greater understanding” is required when it comes to adoption reunions and GSA.
