Passenger alerts authorities after woman abandons eight-month-old baby on Kozhikode train and disappears.
Kozhikode: A passenger handed over a baby left behind by a woman on a train to railway authorities. The incident occurred on the Kozhikode–Shornur passenger train, which departed from Kozhikode railway station at 10.10 am on Monday.
The woman boarded the train from Kozhikode station. She placed her eight-month-old baby on a seat and told a nearby passenger to “have a keep an eye on baby”. She told the passenger, “I am going to the toilet and will come back; till then look after it.”
Even after the train departed from the station, the woman did not return to the seat. The passenger became worried because the woman did not come back for the baby and did not know what to do with the eight-month-old child.
When the train reached Feroke railway station at 10.23 am, the passenger informed the station master. The baby was handed over to the station master at the station. Later, the Kozhikode Railway Police and Railway Childline jointly took custody of the child from the station master.
The woman was located during a search carried out on the railway station premises. She told the police that the child had been given to someone. There is a suspicion that the young woman may be mentally unwell. Reports indicate that she has reportedly been staying at different places in the city. Similar incidents involving the same woman have been reported earlier.
The child has been shifted to Homely Home, which accommodates children below the age of six under the auspices of St. Vincent’s Home. The Child Welfare Committee said a decision on handing over the child to the mother will be taken after reviewing its report.
