Amritsar’s Ramesh wins two gold medals at Special Olympics East Asia competition in Hong Kong

Ramesh, a resident of the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society in Amritsar, has won two gold medals at the Special Olympics East Asia Competition 2026 held in Hong Kong, bringing recognition to the institution, Punjab and India.

Ramesh secured first place in both the doubles and mixed-team competitions. He finished fourth in the singles competition.

He returned to Amritsar with the two gold medals and was given a warm welcome at the Pingalwara institution, where officials, administrators, and social workers congratulated him on his achievement.

Dr. Inderjit Kaur, head of the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, said Ramesh had been abandoned by his family as a child and was unable to speak when he came under the care of the institution.

“Pingalwara took responsibility for his care and upbringing and provided him with specialised training,” Kaur said.

With training and sustained effort, Ramesh developed his skills in bowling and went on to compete at the international level, where he won two gold medals in Hong Kong.

Kaur said Ramesh’s achievement demonstrated the potential of people with special needs when they receive appropriate support and opportunities.

“His success shows that with the right training, encouragement and opportunity, special children can achieve at the international level,” she said.

Ramesh was also met by Gurminder Singh, SDM-2, Amritsar, who congratulated him on his performance.

“It is a matter of pride that the special children of Pingalwara are showcasing their talent at the international level and bringing recognition to the country,” Singh said.

He added that the administration would continue to support Pingalwara and its residents.

Social worker Pawandeep Sharma also praised the institution for providing opportunities to children who had been rejected or abandoned by their families or society.

“Pingalwara not only takes care of such children but also identifies their abilities and gives them an opportunity to move forward,” Sharma said.

Ramesh’s performance in Hong Kong has highlighted the role of specialised training and institutional support in helping people with disabilities participate in competitive sports and achieve success at international events.

His two gold medals in the doubles and mixed-team competitions have also added to the record of sporting achievements by athletes associated with Pingalwara.
