Vijayawada: In a shocking incident, a woman abandoned a newborn baby at a VMC public toilet located in front of the Krishna Lanka police station in Vijayawada on Saturday. The incident came to light when a VMC sanitation worker entered the toilet room for cleaning.
The worker immediately alerted the Krishna Lanka police, who rushed the baby to a government hospital for treatment. According to initial information, an unidentified woman arrived at the toilet complex in an auto-rickshaw on the pretext of using the facility and left the newborn behind. She allegedly hid the infant inside the toilet room using a bucket before fleeing the spot.
Upon receiving the information, Krishna Lanka police launched an investigation and began analysing CCTV footage. The auto-rickshaw driver was taken into custody for questioning. Police sources said the woman who abandoned the baby has since been traced, taken into custody, and is being questioned. A case was registered, and further investigation is underway.
“The woman, who is the mother of the newborn baby, gave birth to the child at the toilet complex and abandoned the baby there. The incident took place around 4 am. A probe is underway,” Krishna Lanka circle inspector SSV Nagaraju said.
