Adoption Cumbria: We need more LGBTQ+ families to adopt | Times and Star

Adoption Cumbria is urging more people to consider adoption as part of LGBTQ+ Adoption and Fostering Week.

The campaign, which runs from March 2 to 8, is encouraging individuals and couples to consider whether they would “open their home and heart to a child who needs a permanent family.”

The organisation said: “Adoption can be transformative — offering children safety, love and stability, while enriching the lives of the adults who care for them.”

A spokesperson for the organisation said: “Adoption Cumbria has a strong and growing LGBTQ+ adoption community, and LGBTQ+ applicants are not only welcomed — they are valued.

“Their strength, empathy and inclusive approaches often provide exactly what waiting children need.

“There is no single way to build a family.

“There is only the commitment to love, nurture and advocate for a child who needs you.”

Amy, 33, and Kirsty, 35, are among those who Adoption Cumbria say have had a life-changing experience adopting through the organisation.

They adopted their son Archie (not his real name) in May 2021, when he was 23 months old.

Archie is now six years old, and the family say their bond is stronger than ever.

Kirsty said: “We’re really proud to be part of the adoption community.

“We both sit on adoption panels and regularly speak during Stage One training.

“It’s our way of paying back the service that helped us become a family and find our son.”

Amy said: “We never felt any different or less valued because we’re a same-sex couple.

“Families come in all shapes and sizes, and what children need most is love, commitment and stability.”

Kirsty added: “Adoption isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely worth it — and you don’t do it alone.”

Adoption Cumbria says support is available for all adopters.

The organisation provides training, therapeutic support, peer groups and regular check-ins, so that new families are supported beyond the initial stages.

A spokesperson said: “From school transitions to attachment support, adopters can access expert help whenever it’s needed.”

Those interested in adoption are being encouraged to take the first step now.

Adoption Cumbria is holding an online information event on Tuesday March 31 at 6pm, where potential adopters can meet the team, ask questions and hear from people who have already adopted.
